Derry Girls Season 3 Ep 1 - Liam Neeson's in this!?
Ephraim Belnap
It's finally on Netflix! Good show!
It's about a bunch of teenage girls in '90's Ireland during a semi-martial law period when Irish rebels were fighting British government for independence, often with bombs in public locations. I don't have time to get into all the details, but what that means is that the show is a comedy but also a historical drama and also occasionally just a drama. But it's mostly a comedy, doing the kind of fast-paced, nonsensical, perfectly-wrong scenarios that you see in sitcoms or romcoms. This season is supposed to be the last, so it's the final chance for them to go all out.
The season premiere was very good. Classic screw-up - the kids try to break into the school to find out their GCSE results early (GCSE's are very important exams in the UK school system) the same night some thieves steal all the school computers, leaving them holding the bag when the cops show up.
Aside from the typical rapid comedy, Liam Neeson also showed up! As the officer in charge of the case. The resident wild card of the group even hits on him lol.
While it's only one episode, this is a major win for the show. Liam Neeson is an Irishman, one of its most famous, and him showing up is a huge endorsement. Considering the show's not evenly remotely for his demographic, the only way he could've heard about it was because people around him insisted it was so good he had to see it, and then that he liked it so much he was like, "I have to be on this show" and got in touch with the creators. While the show's already been widely lauded for its place in Irish history and culture, this is a positively golden touch, and certain to keep it on the shelf for a long time.
I still have to watch the other episodes, but this premiere was a darn good one!
